8th East Kent (Buffs) arrived in France as part of 72 Brigade, 24th Division but in January, 1916, they transferred to 17 Brigade but still in 24th Division. At the same time the division moved further north to the Ypres salient where they remained until moving to the Somme in the summer of 1916. On 19th March, 1916, 4 men from 8th Buffs were killed in action but the History of the regiment makes no mention of it and the Battalion Diary needs to be consulted to see if that sheds any light on their deaths. 60% of casualties on the Western Front were as a result of shell fire so it is likely this is how Samuel Pearce met his death. |
